American doctors trapped in Gaza are urgently calling on the United States to act on President Joe Biden’s promise to cease all arms shipments to Israel if Tel Aviv attacks Rafah.
In an interview, Dr. Adam Hamawy, a former U.S. Army medic, described the harrowing scenes of widespread suffering in Rafah. Hamawy drew chilling comparisons between the current situation in Gaza and other war zones.
“Think of the injuries that you see in war, with blood everywhere, with shrapnel that’s supposed to kill soldiers and military personnel and take out tanks and bunkers,” Hamawy said. “Now think about that going through a child’s body.”
Hamawy said that American politicians need to see firsthand the devastation caused by American-made weapons in Gaza. He even recounted treating numerous children with severe burns and amputations in just a few hours. Hamawy also mentioned finding fragments of a Lockheed Martin-made munition at the home of a medical student.
Meanwhile, in a poignant op-ed for the Los Angeles Times, Dr. Mahmoud Sabha, a wound care physician and another American doctor stranded in Gaza, expressed shock at the cruelty of Israel’s actions. He highlighted the dire consequences of the blockade on Rafah, which has not only halted the flow of aid but also prevented the arrival of new aid workers and the flight of Palestinians across the border and into Egypt. Sabha warned that if Israeli forces push hospitals in Rafah to evacuate, it would be catastrophic for patients with severe injuries who cannot be easily moved.
“If the hospital were abandoned or their families were forced to evacuate, I have no clue how these patients would survive, especially those with amputations restricting their movement,” Sabha said. “I imagine the patients saying a final goodbye to their loved ones. Some doctors and nurses have been volunteering here for a long time. Some of us have been to Gaza several times. Yet we continue to be shocked by the cruelty. We are not used to this degree of carnage. Even the local staff continues to be shocked.”
A few weeks ago, President Joe Biden warned Israel that the U.S. would cease the supply of bombs and artillery shells if Israeli forces proceeded with their planned offensive on the southern Gazan city of Rafah. (Related: Biden gives ultimatum to Israel: Don’t attack Rafah or you’ll lose supply of U.S. bombs, artillery shells.)
During a televised interview, Biden reiterated that the U.S. would not condone nor support actions that could result in a humanitarian crisis. The decision to halt weapons supplies comes on the heels of the U.S. pausing the delivery of 3,500 munitions, including 2,000-pound bombs, amid mounting concerns about civilian casualties in densely populated areas. The pause in arms shipments is not temporary. Further deliveries may face delays or obstacles if Israel proceeds with the offensive.
But despite the earlier pledge to cut off some arms shipments if Israel launched an assault on Rafah, the doctors claimed that the U.S. has not yet taken any action.
Illinois State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid (D-Justice), who serves as the representative for the doctors to the federal government, said: “We’re doing both things: trying to make sure our government is pushing for basic protections for aid workers and, more globally, trying to stop our government from funding the ongoing genocide in Gaza.”
